Our main goal for SET is to provide a meal for the children at the school in Pavuu during the school year. It is shocking to realize that, without this provision, village children will often miss school during the hungry (i.e. dry) season to scavenge for food (rats, mice, birds and fruits) in the bush.
Children help around the home and in the fields with domestic chores and farming. A meal eases acute pressure on families, and enables parents to release children from this type of work to be able to actually attend school.
The cook is employed by the villagers themselves as their contribution to the program. The food is cooked on sight with the children bringing their own plates or bowls, and in some instances, the firewood for the fire to cook the food over.
Other donations received are used for maintenance or special projects.
Pavuu village (pronounced ‘Pa-voo’) is about five miles south-east of the major market town of Lawra. It is just off the mud road which runs east from Lawra towards the town of Jirapa.
The village sits by the nearby Kunyukuo tributary , which is often dry. The soil is not especially fertile and, with the seasonal and inconsistent rains in this area, the farming is very hard and often unproductive. There is a small Baptist church in the village.
The motto ‘Veritas Vincet’ – ‘Truth prevails’, chosen by the local team, is on the front of the school. Interestingly, it was also the motto of the Hussites.
Our Mission is to share the gospel, distribute Bibles and sound literature, assist in education and relieve poverty and its associated conditions as stated in Galatians 6:10
